Are Maternity Clothes Really Necessary?

The same rules which applied to our mothers and grandmothers no longer apply to us.

Today, at many shopping centers and malls, you'll find several maternity clothing stores catering to the specific needs of the pregnant mother. In addition, there are thousands of legitimate maternity sites on the Internet.

When I was pregnant with my first child, my grandmother and mother couldn't understand why I was buying maternity cloths. Neither of them worked outside the home, therefore they didn't need maternity clothes, which was appropriate for work. Today's generation of pregnant women do need maternity clothes. We work outside the home, exercise, and have active lives. When I was seven months along, I'd told my mother that I
had just finished swimming laps. She exploded in a fit of rage, because pregnant women were not supposed to do things like that. How have times changed. We are living in a completely different era, where pregnant women work up until their due date, exercise, and maintain very active lives. The same rules which applied to our mothers and grandmothers no longer apply to us.

If you're pregnant and wondering if you should purchase a completely new wardrobe of maternity clothes, the answer will probably be yes. Many times, good quality maternity clothes can last at least 3 pregnancies, especially if you purchase traditional classic styles instead of fads.

Maternity clothes are not cheap, and are only worn for the nine months which you are pregnant and possibly for the few weeks after when your body is getting back into shape. Afterwards, your maternity clothes are then boxed up and stored until you need them again.

For my first pregnancy, I purchased clothes which were classy and exceptional quality for work. For casual outings, I had a couple pairs of maternity jeans and wore one of my husband's shirts; otherwise, I wore extra large clothes such as oversized sweaters, t-shirts, or overalls, when I didn't have to presentable.

Most pregnant women don't need expensive casual maternity clothes, unless it is for work. This will save you a tremendous amount of money. When shopping for maternity clothes if you are going to breastfeed, make sure the clothes can be used for breastfeeding later.

If you intend to breastfeed, you'll have to consider purchasing additional clothes to accommodate your breastfeeding. Nursing clothes, like maternity clothes are not cheep, and because of this, many question the need for nursing clothes. Again, the answer is yes, we do. Granted, you will not need as many nursing clothes as you do maternity clothes. The majority of my nursing clothes were button down blouses, and tops, which provided quick access to my breast. However, I did have a few stylish
nursing clothes for when I went out or met with friends. If you can find good quality maternity clothes, which can also be used as nursing clothes later, then by all means, buy them.

Unfortunately, for a long time the style of maternity clothes was very limited and for the most part, not very attractive. The reason for this was the fact that many designers of maternity clothes decorated the garment with enormous flower, safety pins, storks, or some form of teddy bear. It wasn't until recently that many designers finally woke up and started designing maternity clothes, which have a classic and stylish look and do not make you, look like a clown. When you are investing this much money, you want the clothes to feel comfortable and make you look good.
